The new Drupal 10 upgrade includes two major changes for anyone looking to make changes to pages within Drupal. Outlined below are the differences you can expect upon logging into a Drupal site following the February 29th, 2024 update.

New Admin Theme

The Admin Theme determines what you see when logged into a Drupal site with editing access. this includes the toolbar at the top of the screen, the fonts and colors in areas such as the Content list or Editing screen, and the locations of some actions on those pages (including the Preview, Save, and Publishing state actions). This section will cover what you can expect to see here.

User Profile Overrides

We have exposed some admin theme settings for users to customize their experience when logged in.

Available overrides

  1. Appearance
    1. Default: Auto
    2. Set the theme to either Light or Dark mode explicitly, or Auto to use your computer's system preferences
  2. Accent Color
    1. Default: Gin Blue
    2. The Accent Color will dictate things like button, highlight, and toggle colors in the Admin interface
  3. Focus Color
    1. Default: Gin Focus Color
    2. The color of the outline surrounding a key-board accessible element when it's currently focused
  4. Increase Contrast
    1. Default: Off
    2. When turned on, all fields and areas are outlined in either black or white depending on your Appearance setting
  5. Navigation (Drupal Toolbar)
    1. Default: Legacy
    2. The Drupal Toolbar is the set of bars across the top of the screen when logged in with editing access. It contains menus for accessing the Content list, Media types, Custom Blocks, etc. There are a few options you can choose from here.
  6. Layout Density
    1. Default: Compact
    2. Layout Density affects the height of table rows such as when looking at the Content list to see a site's available pages
  7. Enable Form Description Toggle
    1. Default: Off
    2. By default, rows and their fields display help/description text underneath them. Turning this on will instead place a clickable question mark help icon next to each field that has help text. Clicking the icon will toggle visibility of the help text for its respective field.

Enabling Overrides

1) Click on your name in the toolbar and then 2) on "Edit Profile"

Under "Admin theme settings" at the bottom of the page, turn on "Enable Overrides"

New Rich Text Editor

Also known as CK Editor 5. This new version may have some quirks when playing with Drupal Paragraphs, so please notify [email protected] with screenshots and/or a detailed description should you come across any display or functionality issues (e.g. the editing area extends beyond the border and hides under the sidebar).

Toolbar Overflow

On narrower screens, any editor toolbar options which cannot fit go into a collapsed menu which can be accessed by clicking on the 3 dots on the right hand side:

Media Browser

Inline Image option removed in favor of using the Media Browser for the following reasons:

  • Inline Images can occasionally fail to register as being in-use by Drupal which results in the image being deleted automatically
  • Media Browser allows uploading a new image or selecting from images already uploaded on the site

For more information on using the Media Browser, see this How To article with step-by-step instructions
