Wireless Adapter Information

The wireless adapter on your device must comply with IEEE 802.11 standards. The following standards are supported on all of our wireless networks:

  • 802.11ax* (also branded as WiFi-6)
    • (*currently only available in HYBL with more support coming)
  • 802.11ac (also branded as WiFi-5)
    • (includes both wave1 and wave2)
  • 802.11n
  • 802.11g
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11b

* Remodel or new construction projects will typically have the latest model APs installed, which now include 802.11ax capable APs. We also upgrade existing APs on campus when they become end-of-life and/or end-of-support. 802.11ax capability and coverage will slowly increase across campus over the next few years.

Note that bridging or binding adapters is not supported.

Wireless Adapter Suggestions

-- The following is a list of suggested wireless adapters if you need to add or upgrade wireless capability to your laptop, desktop, or other device with an available USB port.
-- The list includes models in a few different sizes to help accommodate your personal needs.
-- Some models come with cradles and USB cables so the adapter can be placed in a position to receive the best signal.
-- Many other wireless adapters work with the UCCS wireless networks. This is merely a list of suggested adapters that we have tested and are from reputable manufacturers.

Things to consider when choosing a wireless adapter for use at UCCS:

  • Size - smaller adapters work well with laptops and you can often leave them plugged in. However since they are smaller, they house smaller and fewer antennas. Larger adapters can house larger, and more, antennas, which can provide faster speeds.
  • Cradle - if you are adding wireless capability to a desktop computer, you should choose an adapter that comes with a cradle and USB cable. This way you can set the adapter up on top of the desktop tower, or on top of your desk, for best signal reception.
  • Wireless standards - your adapter should support WPA2-Enterprise security. Although WPA3 is coming out soon, WPA2-Enterprise will be supported for at least a few more years and should be used (opposed to using an open, unsecured guest network).
