The Serial Number/Service Tag of a computer is used by the manufacturer and OIT to check the computer's warranty, name, and run updates.
All computers should have the Serial Number/Service Tag listed somewhere on the computer's case.
For Dell computers, it is referred to as a Service Tag, for HP computers, it is referred to as a Serial Number, and for Mac computers, it is referred to as a Serial.
Dell service tags should be 5 to 7 characters long, HP computer serial numbers should be 10 characters long, and Mac serials should be 12 characters long.
Dell / HP Laptops
Dell and HP laptops should have the serial number/service tag listed next to Service Tag or S/N on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.
Dell / HP Desktops
Dell and HP desktops should have the serial number/service tag listed next to Service Tag or S/N on a sticker on the top of the desktop.
Dell/HP All-in-Ones
Dell and HP all-in-ones should have the serial number/service tag listed next to Service Tag or S/N on a sticker on the lower back of the computer.
Mac Laptops
Mac laptops should have the serial listed on the bottom of the computer next to Serial

Mac desktops should have the serial listed on the bottom of the stand below the barcode next to Serial No
